Handwriting Is Slipping Out Of The Hands

Day 69/100
Last year, I had seen a newspaper report which said that a reputed private school in our city (Chennai) had insisted that students be trained to write in the Lucida font. The purpose of this exercise was to make the handwriting look neat and therefore impressive. But seriously, is handwriting so important anymore? Many decades back, handwriting book used to also be included in the stack of books that arrived in the new academic year for children up until standard 1. Do you notice those anymore? Of course, schools are teaching cursive writing to children, class notes, homework and classwork are still done using pencils/pens. But for how long? Despite all this, children still seem very comfortable with the keyboard/keypad. I have to keep telling my son that if he has to write something, he must use a pen/pencil and a writing pad rather than quickly jotting it down in the notepad of the phone.

I really miss writing. I have a good handwriting and when I was young I liked it when people appreciated it. But now, I myself seldom write. I am constantly making notes on my phone, whether it is for any writing work or grocery list. Somehow, I’ve forgotten how to write. Has that happened to you too? It’s strange that having grown up writing and more writing, today my hand pains if I have to write as little as one page. But, I’m not giving up. I’ve decided that I’ll keep a writing pad and pen handy and remember to reach out to it if I have to make a note. What do you think? Do you make notes on the phone or do you write it down physically? Let us bring back the good, old handwriting back or they will become extinct like the letters. And with it will go all the personal touch that can be added to the written word.
