How Much Is Too Much

If wealth could buy all the happiness in the world, all the rich people would be over the moon at all times. But does that happen? Recently, a friend of mine had called to say that she was under severe mental stress. That sounded strange to me because she belonged to what we would describe as an elite family and her social media profile was filled with 'happy' moments with family. She seemed to be having a time of her life and she had the strange itch to record every event of every day, however insignificant, and upload them. So, when a person like that complained about stress and unhappiness with life, it sounded fictitious. But if you delve deeper and look into the lives of people who live an exorbitant lifestyle, you would conclude that happiness lies in having as much as is enough.

Ok…I’m not saying you shouldn’t work hard, reach higher positions at work and earn loads of money. All I mean is when we believe that money is the only road to happiness, life becomes onerous. I remember my mom telling me that her happiest days were when her family had just enough to satisfy their needs. No luxury, no extravagance-- a simple, content life. She often said that she had realised that money can never buy peace, contentment or even happiness. It could only solve your financial issues, if at all any existed.

When you are constantly working to earn more, to up your status and lifestyle, you move farther and farther from your family and people. You socialise with people you have to and own a palatial house but even in that house, you are distant from each other. There is no want of material needs, yet something is amiss. The warmth, the love, spending time with loved ones and leisure time. What use is that money?

What’s your opinion? How much is too much for you?
